Great Salt Lake from 10000 feet. The red hue of the North Arm comes from a type of bacteria, called halophilic bacteria, that flourishes when the salt level rises to extreme levels. The North Arm of the lake is cut off from most fresh water flow by a long gravel railroad causeway.
